VERSION 6.X Print format version of this page

Version 6.37 Build 1/23/2003

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • Fixes SQL restore issue where if original SQL server was offline when trying to restore using the MOVE option restore would fail.
  • Fixes compatibility issue with sequential autoloader mode.
  • Fixes registry backup issue if system partition was on a dynamic disk.

Version 6.35 Build 8/26/2002

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • New DF2K.sys (UltraBac Locked File Backup Driver) that fixes:
"Dr. Watsons," locked systems, BSOD's, registry backup errors, conflict with Perfdisk, and other issues.
  • Protected Media Date sometimes wouldn't allow you to backup even if protected date had passed (if allow override was turned off).
  • Backup log is always created as soon as backup process is created, even if backup aborts because of no media, etc.
  • Roaming/Mandatory Profiles that use the .man extension instead of .dat extension are now properly backed up as part of registry.

Hidden Registry Key Entries:

(BuildDate is automatically created, the other first five entries have to be manually added by the user otherwise UltraBac assumes a value of zero)

TreatFileNotFoundAsWarning = REG_DWORD
1 = FileNotFound reported as warning.
0= FileNotFound reported as error.

TreatDataTruncationAsWarning = REG_DWORD
1 = Truncation reported as warning.
0 = Truncation reported as error.

LogOptionalWarnings = REG_DWORD
1 = Log above Warnings to backup log and event log.
0 = Do not log above warnings to backup log or event log.

SuppressUnknownProfileReports = REG_DWORD
1 = Don't report SID errors in backup log or event log.
0 = Report SID errors in backup log and event log.

SuppressSplash = REG_DWORD
1 = Don't show UltraBac Splash Screen when launching UltraBac (faster if using Terminal Services).
0 = Show UltraBac Splash Screen when launching UltraBac.

BuildDate = REG_SZ
Now shows the build date of the UltraBac version installed on machine ( i.e. August 26, 2002).

Added support so that running ub /P from the command line will return the next scheduled backup time.
ub /P
Next scheduled backup 'Server Backup' at: 6/18/2002 11:00 PM

ub /P:\\COMPUTERNAME
COMPUTERNAME: Next scheduled backup 'Server Backup' at: 6/18/2002 11:00 PM

Version 6.32 Build 12/21/2001

New Features:

  • Locked file support for Win2K.
  • Locked file support for Image backup - UltraBac's Locked File Manager must be licensed to use this feature.
  • Advanced SQL restore command capability.
  • Sparse switch removed from NetWare agent.
Updates/Fixes in this Build:
  • Backup - In some instances, UltraBac would hang and the CPU usage would go to 100% while doing an image backup.
  • Backup - Under specific conditions, Unix Agent would fail while backing up files.
  • Backup - When spanning media going to disk, a pop-up box would request a second volume. User would have to click OK for backup to continue.
  • Backup - Backups set to span multiple disk paths would fail to fill the disk before spanning media.

  • Backup - NetWare sets were not created correctly.
  • Backup - Autoloader barcoding problems.
  • Restore - CRC Error on Restore from Disk.
  • Restore - Reporting error that caused Restore to Abort.
  • Restore - On restore, UBDR would ask for Volume 2 when no Volume 2 was made.
  • Restore - UBDR was unable to restore partitions that are FAT32.
  • Verify - In some instances, CRC Error would occur on Root drives (C:\ <DIR>).
Current Limitations:
  • Oracle hot backups do not function correctly.
Current Known Issues:
  • Reporting issue - The backup runs fine but gets this error:
Error InitAdminNames() - LsaOpenPolicy for NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM (1722)
Error IsAdminOperator() - Domain Controller for NT AUTHORITY could not be found (2453)

Version 6.31 Build 8/1/2001

New Features:

  • Now support backing up / restoring active cluster image backups on NT4.  Previously only supported on Windows 2000.

  • Added support to do image backups/restores on FAT32 partitions.

  • New macros added in 6.31
$BC$ - Barcode string of last volume used
$MB$ - Integer of total MB written in set
$TM$ - Set backup time (integer seconds)
$FC$ - Set file count (not inc dirs)

  • Speed enhancement made to GUI Image Backup code that will significantly increase speed of image backup on some computers.

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • Backups and restores of encrypted files will now work.

  • Restoring security permissions on folders now works.

  • Multiple issues through UBDR.exe.

  • Various autoloader compatibility upgrades.

  • On restore, occasionally UltraBac wasn't able to find its volume label, which resulted in a "not an UltraBac media" message.  This is fixed so that volume errors will only occur when they should.

  • When checking "restore in use files" upon restore, you might have received an error message that said the file was in use.  These errors are no longer reported.

  • Fix in UltraCopy when used in conjunction with a before/after command from within UltraBac.

  • Changes to mailbox agent to allow correct operation when using foreign versions of Outlook (MAPI client).

  • Changes to never overwrite media-label (volume name) -- affected subsequent media in multi-media backups.

  • Win9x/ME agent connection bug fixed.

  • Fix for backups made to Device Sets using RAIT(D) 0/1. On restore the media was reported as foreign media and workaround was needed to restore. Workaround no longer needed and restores now work.

  • When using failover to a tape drive and the tape drive was empty, UltraBac presented an error with no way to continue the backup. Now fixed.

  • With v6.3, when writing to a backup tape drive that supported hardware compression, UB would write the image in an incorrect format that UBDR was unable to restore.

  • NetWare agent fixes several issues:  The "SPARSE=" switch has been removed -- all non-compressed files are now treated as if they were sparse with no appreciable performance hit.  Fixes problem where sparse files may cause disk space to be used up on backup.

  • UBDR has a fix in speed on certain machines that were previously slow.

  • If one or more backups have been performed spanning media (e.g., disk3 to tape0), with media protected but overwrite not allowed so that it appends, tape0 is labeled as volume 2.  If a backup is then performed to tape0 only and then a restore is performed for that set, UB looks for volume 1, when tape0 is actually still volume 2.  UB displays the msgBox that informs you that you have the wrong volume and requests the correct one.  Fixed in 6.31.

  • Slight modifications in the system state restore.  We had a couple reports of a restore problem only with machines running Active Directory and only in rare instances.

  • Erasing the disk path wasn't deleting the sub-files resulting from setting MaximumDiskBackupFileSize in HKLM\Software\BEI\Ultrabac. Fixed in 6.31.

  • The default value for HKLM\Software\BEI\Ultrabac\MaximumDiskBackupFileSize is 512 MB.  This enables users to back up to UX machines and to read from FAT32 partitions using ubdr.exe to restore images.

  • In machines where disks have been added and re-arranged, it is possible that prior versions of UltraBac would incorrectly display the disk information when loading an image set.

  • When using foreign media, a bug existed when rewinding the tape where a tape drive does not report an error when requested to use TAPE_ABSOLUTE_BLOCK positioning. In this scenario, the volume label and header do not get written to the tape even though the media actually will get written to it. A workaround has been incorporated for these tape drives.

Current Limitations:

  • UBDR replaces the three floppy restore procedure. This has been done primarily to allow restores that are written to a network disk path, and to provide the ability to restore with the use of a single floppy. The three floppy procedure had some features that the UBDR procedure no longer has. The limitations in the UBDR procedure include:
    - Single File restore from an image that was backed up using 'active clusters only' is not possible.
    - Restore registry feature that existed on the three floppies doesn't exist on the new UBDR.
Restoring a registry still possible using Windows 2000 Recovery Console or NTFSDOS.

  • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

  • Exchange 2000 support not yet available. Estimated availability 1/15/2002.

  • UBDR disaster recovery doesn't support IDE tape drives.

  • SQL 2000 on Windows 2000 Cluster Server -- Backups/Restores don't work because the connection fails.  Microsoft has confirmed that this is an issue in SQL 2000.  A workaround will be provided by UltraBac in the near future.  Article Q354974 will be available soon to address this issue.

  • Clarification made for users wanting to clear the transaction logs when doing a full SQL backup.

Current Known Issues:

  • UX Agent: There is a problem overwriting files during the restore.  When "ask" or "overwrite" is selected, UltraBac will not ask or overwrite the file.

Version 6.3 Build 5/14/2001

New Features:

  • Unix agent. Backups extended file attributes. Supported Operating Systems include Linux, Solaris, HPUX, and FreeBSD.

  • New network disaster recovery module.  This executable can be run from a bootable DOS diskette.  While booted into DOS, running UBDR.EXE has the capability to run disk to disk image backups, disk to tape image backups, local image restores from tape device, and local restores from an image on a remote network disk (if bootable floppy has network support).

  • Image backups now support in use clusters.  This means you will now have the option to tell UltraBac to back up only the data on the partition rather than the whole partition sector by sector.  This will save time and storage space.  Also, a new Preferences was added called "always backup partitions individually."

  • Image mounts work in Windows 2000.  Note: an image backup of the entire disk MUST be performed in order to mount the image.  UltraBac does not support mounting just a partition image backup.  Therefore, in order to run an image of the entire disk, the "always backup partitions individually" preference will have to be unchecked.  It is located in Tools/Preferences/Image.

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • Image backups of the entire disk were not restoring correctly with the three Disaster Recovery diskettes.  The new UBDR executable can be run as a fix for image backups made with 6.2.  The bug in 6.2 only affected entire image backups, not partition image backups.

  • Neither SQL Incremental nor Differential backups were working properly in versions prior to 6.3.

  • There was an issue with Exchange restores.  If the target was too small for the restore, UltraBac reported an undefined error:0.  UltraBac version 6.3 will now report the correct error message if that situation should occur.

  • If an autoloader was set to "sequential mode," UltraBac would ask for the user to manually insert the second volume instead of automatically inserting it.  The new build will span to the next volume as expected.  Note: This bug was only active with certain autoloaders.

  • Mounting an image backup will work with UltraBac 6.3.

  • UltraBac is not able to successfully back up or restore encrypted files.  The encrypted file or directory may appear to backup with no errors in the backup log.  However, upon restore, the integrity of the encrypted file(s) will be gone.  This includes all files in subdirectories if they were chosen upon encryption.

  • If a backup is done by UltraBac with a build date after 4/8/01, the permissions of the folder weren't backed up correctly.  Therefore,  UltraBac won't restore the original permissions of the folder or any subdirectories beneath it.  For example, if a directory was backed up with permissions set for only certain users, upon restore, the permissions will change to "Everyone with Full Control."  This will be fixed upon release of 6.31.

Version 6.2 Build 2/1/2001

New Features:

  • Speed improvement over 6.1. 10% to 50% faster.

  • Disaster Recovery Diskettes/CDs/OBDR can now be created on a machine running Windows 2000, but the source path must still be to a NT4 CD (using a Windows 2000 CD will not work).

  • WinME agent now supported.

  • Win9x agent registry backup/restore improved.

  • Express Index support added for command-line restore.

  • Network Disaster Recovery (NetDR) is a program (UBDR.exe) that will allow you to restore an image that was backed up to a disk path to any local disk via a DOS network diskette.

  • Sophos Anti-Virus Interface (SAVI) now integrated.

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • If you have a disk with more than two partitions and you select all but one of these partitions, UltraBac may not write an index to the end of these sets when performing an image backup. That means, when booting from the disaster recovery disks, UltraBac may not be able to detect an image backup on the tape even though one exists. This will be fixed in the 6.2 release due out the the week of 12/05/00.
Workaround may be to recover index from GUI and restore via GUI to a secondary disk attached to the system.

  • Static Mirror image backups in Windows 2000 may give errors when trying to boot into the mirrored image.  The image will restore correctly, but any attempt to login will result in a page file error message.   If this should happen, call our technical support department and we'll send you a file called "Patchmbr.com."  This file can be run by booting into DOS, inserting a floppy that contains the patchmbr.com, and running the utility.  The disk will be patched and the error message will cease to exist.

  • The Windows 95 agent displayed a dll error when activated on the client machine.

  • UltraBac skipped file names longer than 256 characters in length.

  • When backing up the IExplore event log, UltraBac displayed the following error: "183-Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

  • SQL 2000 with multiple instances had a bug where if the computername + the instance name was longer than 18 characters it would cause an AV.

  • NetWare restore memory leak fixed.

Current Limitations:

  • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

  • Disaster Recovery Diskettes/CDs/OBDR can now be created on a machine running Windows 2000, but the source path must still be to a NT4 CD (using a Windows 2000 CD will not work).

  • Exchange 2000 support not yet available. Estimated availability 1/15/2002.

Current Known Issues:

  • The Icon files on Mac Volumes do not get restored properly.

  • After finishing an Oracle agent restore, the restore will take an extra few seconds to complete the job even after UltraBac has been shut down.

  • There is no uninstall program for the Win9x/ME version of UltraBac.

  • If you attempt an Exchange restore and the target disk fills up before the restore is complete, you get an "Undefined error: (0)."

  • When backing up an Exchange server to a disk path with span media disabled and the disk path fills up, the backup should abort, but it doesn't. The process just hangs and further Exchange backups don't happen because a backup is already in progress.

  • Full image backups made into the O/S are not restoring properly with the three disaster recovery floppy disks.  Contact technical support for the workaround.  They will send you a UBDR.exe that you can use to restore the image.

  • Image mounts are not working correctly.

Version 6.1 Build 10/18/2000

New Features:

  • Single Mailbox Backup/Restore.

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • Exchange Incremental Backups now working.

  • Static Mirror Image on Windows 2000.

Current Limitations:

  • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

  • Can't mount an image backup as a drive letter in Win2K.

  • Disaster Recovery Diskettes/CD's/OBDR must be created on a machine running NT4 and the source path must be to a NT4 CD (using a Windows 2000 CD will not work).

  • Exchange 2000 support not yet available. Estimated availability 1/15/2002.

Current Known Issues:

  • If you have a disk with more than two partitions and you select all but one of these partitions, UltraBac may not write an index to the end of these sets when performing an image backup. That means, when booting from the disaster recovery disks, UltraBac may not be able to detect an image backup on the tape even though one exists. This will be fixed in the 6.2 release due out the the week of 12/05/00.
Workaround may be to recover index from GUI and restore via GUI to a secondary disk attached to the system.

  • The Icon files on Mac Volumes do not get restored properly.

  • If you're using a stand-alone tape drive and UltraBac reaches the end of the media, it will hang when asking for volume 2.  The appication will remain hung unless you cancel the backup or provide UltraBac with another available media.  This situation can be problematic if a scheduled backup is supposed to take place the following evening.  It won't be able to start the job if the previous night's job still has control of the storage device.

  • "Compare to disk during verify" isn't working correctly.  It is the cause of various errors that were not present in previous versions and has the potential to hang the verify.  "Compare to disk during verify" is enabled in either Tools / Preference / Backup, and/or Scheduler / Scheduled Backups / Options.

  • Static Mirror image backups in Windows 2000 may give errors when trying to boot into the mirrored image.  The image will restore correctly, but any attempt to login will result in a pagefile error message.   If this should happen, call our technical support department and we'll send you a file called "Patchmbr.com."  This file can be run by booting into DOS, inserting a floppy that contains the patchmbr.com, and running the utility.  The disk will be patched and the error message will cease to exist.

  • The Windows 95 agent will display a dll error when activated on the client machine.

  • UltraBac will skip file names longer than 256 characters in length.

  • When backing up the IExplore event log, UltraBac will display the following error: "183-Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

Version 6.0 Build 8/18/2000

New Features -- Windows 2000 System State Support:

  • Win2K Active Directory (System State).

  • Medium Changer device driver for Windows 2000.

  • Recursive Mount point support for Windows 2000.

  • UltraBac doesn't yet support the use of hard links using posix in Windows 2000. If a hard link exists, the actual file gets backed up instead of the link.

Current Limitations in Windows 2000:

  • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

  • Can't mount an image backup as a drive letter in Win2K.

  • Disaster Recovery Diskettes/CDs/OBDR must be created on a machine running NT4 and the source path must be to a NT4 CD (using a Windows 2000 CD will not work).

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

See product history for version 5.54.

Current Known Issues:

  • Under Select Select Storage Device, the maximum number of characters that you can put here is 15. If you put any combination of 1-13 characters then everything is fine. If you put in a string that is exactly 14 characters long then UltraBac hangs when you go into "Schedule\Schedule backups\Options\Define Storage Device."

  • When restoring files and using the option of overwrite by selecting "update," UltraBac restores the files but may give an error or AV upon restoring.

  • Exchange Agent Incremental Backups not working correctly. Exchange Full Backups working ok.

  • Static Mirror Image on Windows 2000 machines may fail if the first partition is NTFS.
