VERSION 5.X

Version 5.54 Build 8/18/2000

New Features:

  • Image Backup will now see disks that contain extended partitions.

  • Improved barcode support.

  • Improved email notification.

  • Support for files with the offline attribute set (used in RSM and HSM).

Current Known Issues with this Build:

  • Under Select Select Storage Device, the max number of characters that you can use is 15. There are no issues when a combination of 1-13 characters is used. If you use a string that is exactly 14 characters long, UltraBac hangs when you go into "Schedule\Schedule backups\Options\Define Storage Device."

  • When restoring files and using the option of overwrite by selecting "update," UltraBac restores the files but may give an error or AV upon restoring.

Updates/Fixes in this Build:

  • Attempted restore of Master Database may result in 'login failed' error message. Workaround is to simply try the same restore again and it will work.

  • Large (> 5GB) backups to disk may result in CRC errors on restore. Workaround is to install version 5.04 and restore.

  • If a device set is created and saved as the default device, UltraBac doesn't remember that it's saved if you re-launch the application. This bug is exclusive to device sets and is not affected using tape or disk devices.

Version 5.53 Build 7/24/2000

New Features:

  • Image Backup will now see disks that contain extended partitions.

  • Current Known Issues with this Build:

    • Attempted restore of Master Database may result in 'login failed' error message. Workaround is to simply try the same restore again and it will work.

    • Large (> 5GB) backups to disk may result in CRC errors on restore. Workaround is to install version 5.04 and restore.

    • If a device set is created and saved as the default device, UltraBac doesn't remember that it's saved if you re-launch the application. This bug is exclusive to device sets and is not affected using tape or disk devices.

    Updates/Fixes in this Build:

    • SQL Agent in Version 5.5 -- when doing a LOCAL VDI (non-named pipes) backup, using software compression will result in the backup being corrupt and not restorable. UltraBac will AV on any attempt to verify or restore. It is important to note that one of these backups will never be restorable. Current workaround is to either force UltraBac to use named pipes only OR to not use software compression.

    • Win9x Agent returns several notices before starting.

    • If you have a removable drive that shows as DISK0, you may have trouble doing image backups because the partition information may not show correctly. Workaround is to assign the removable drive a higher SCSI ID so that it shows as the last disk device in Disk Administrator.

    • UltraBac may not restore the resource forks properly on MAC Volume files.

    • Windows2000 users may find that "Default Editor" link (wordpad) points to the wrong location. Workaround is to specify a correct path to an editor (i.e. (c:\winnt\notepad.exe).

    • Verify and restore logs may incorrectly show 0.00 MB as amount of data verified/restored. Not Supported in Windows 2000.

    • Win2K Active Directory (System State) not yet supported.

    • UsrClass.dat files not being backed up as part of registry.

    • Medium Changer device driver not fully compatible with some autoloaders in Windows 2000.

    • UltraBac is not compatible with SQL 2000 LOCAL VDI backups. Named pipe backups work fine.

    • If you use Recursive Mount points in Windows 2000, UltraBac may fall into an infinite loop when loading a set.

    • UltraBac doesn't yet support the use of hard links using posix in Windows 2000. If a hard link exists, the actual file gets backed up instead of the link.

    • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

    • Can't mount an image backup as a drive letter in Win2K.

    • Disaster Recovery Diskettes/CDs/OBDR must be created on a machine running NT4 and the source path must be to a NT4 CD (using a Windows 2000 CD will not work).

Version 5.52 Build 5/3/2000

Current Known Issues with this Build:

  • SQL Agent in Version 5.5 -- when doing a LOCAL VDI (non named pipes) backup, using software compression will result in the backup being corrupt and not restorable.

Workaround is to specify a correct path to an editor (i.e. c:\winnt\notepad.exe).

  • Verify and restore logs may incorrectly show 0.00 MB as amount of data verified/restored.

Issues Being Researched:

  • Dr. Watson (AV - Access Violation) may occur when backing up a NetWare machine via UNC path if the connection is broken during the backup. UltraBac will return an error on each file, eventually reaching the max number of errors, and AV when that number is reached. (This issue is still under investigation and may actually occur on any client machine backup.)

  • May not be able to properly restore spanned media when barcodes enabled. (Still under investigation. We've not yet duplicated this in-house.)

Not Supported in NT3.51, NT4, or Windows 2000:

  • Image Backup doesn't see disks that contain extended partitions.

Not Supported in Windows 2000:

  • Win2K Active Directory (System State) not yet supported.

  • UsrClass.dat files not being backed up as part of registry.

  • Medium Changer device driver not fully compatible with some autoloaders in Windows 2000.

  • UltraBac is not compatible with SQL 2000 LOCAL VDI backups. Named pipe backups work ok.

Version 5.52 Build 4/13/2000

Updates/Fixes in this build:

  • When using Multiple Drive sets that are incremental/differential, if any set has no files selected (meaning the archive bit is not on for any files on that partition), then all subsequent sets will be skipped and the backup will report as completed successfully.

  • Possible reporting error with files skipped in backup log.

  • Win2K Image backups not yet supported.

  • Access violation occurs when you create a set and use the account info.

  • Oracle HOT backups don't work properly.

  • Possible BSOD caused by dfilter.sys (Locked File Backup driver).

  • Access violation on SQL restore when selecting alternate server if there are no servers specified in the Client Network Utility.

  • Win95/98 agent backups appear to be attempting to restore its registry during backup.

  • Win2K Dynamic Volumes may return error when backing up registry.

  • Partition image backups may not restore properly.

  • Backup hangs when Throttle I/O is enabled.

Current Known Issues with this Build:

  • Win2K Active Directory (System State) not yet supported.

  • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

  • UsrClass.dat files not being backed up as part of registry (Win2K is only OS affected).

  • Can't mount an image backup as a drive letter in Win2K.

Version 5.5 Builds 2/28/2000 and 2/29/2000

New Features:

  • Workaround for firmware issue with some Travan drives that cause tape to eject after backup, even when told not to.

  • Added functionality to SQL Agent for NORECOVERY, MOVE, Alternate Database name, STANDBY and more.

  • Added the ability to back up a SQL database where the database name contains a space.

  • OBDR (One Button Disaster Recovery) now available for select HP tape drives (4mmdat).

  • GUI interface for creating disaster recovery diskettes.

  • NEW AGENT: Locked File Backup. This agent gives you the ability to back up exclusively locked files on a local drive (NT4 only).

  • NEW AGENT: Oracle SQL Local Backup. This agent allows you to do a COLD backup of local Oracle8i+ databases.

  • Updated Medium Changer Device Driver to support more autoloaders.

  • Numerous improvements and fixes with the NetWare agent.

  • Barcoding has been disabled.

  • Added the ability to limit a target disk device size (Quota).

  • Added the ability to restore only the MBR (Master Boot Record) to disaster recovery.

  • Added the ability to span media on GUI Image Backups.

  • Added the ability to use software compression on image backups.

  • New HTML-based Help File with UltraBac KnowledgeBase included.

  • Last Accessed Date is no longer modified when backing up files.

Current Known Issues with these Builds:

  • Win2K Active Directory (System State) not yet supported.

  • Locked File Backup only works with NT4 (also must be a local backup).

  • UsrClass.dat files not being backed up as part of registry (Win2K is only OS affected).

(Also cannot mount an image as a drive letter in Win2k.)

Bug Fixes:

  • Remote Win2K Registry caused UltraBac to Dr. Watson.

  • Fix in Exchange Agent that, on restore, caused the utility eseutil /g to not pass.

  • Fix in the Exchange Agent that corrected problems with incremental restores.

  • Anomaly corrected when "Disable Input Disk Buffering" was selected.

  • Corrected verify errors in SQL Agent when VDI was being used.

  • Search online indexes didn't return indexes beyond 36 days.

  • Corrected an unjustified reporting of error 0xc0000002 on the DR diskettes.

  • $SE$, $SF$ and $IF$ Macros didn't report correctly.

  • Fixed a scheduler bug that reported "No Scheduled Backups" even when a backup was scheduled. Backup, in fact, did start at the scheduled time.

  • Corrected a Dr. Watson caused when changing the "protect media" status.

  • UltraBac hung when target was disk device and permissions on disk devices were "No Access."

  • Backup log sometimes reported the number of files backed up incorrectly if a backup was canceled.

  • If you abort an AD-HOC backup, and immediately try to do a "Prepare for UltraBac," it failed.

  • In extremely rare cases, if two backups launched at the same time, one of those backups could fail with a license error.

  • If a set or restore index is loaded that refers to a remote path, and that path is already connected locally, unloading the set would disconnect the local connection.

  • If a scheduled backup finds "No tape in Drive," selecting Cancel would not cancel, but instead return the same cancel dialog.

  • When a scheduled backup is attempted to a device in use, UltraBac crashed with an AV (Dr. Watson).

  • If you attempted an Exchange incremental backup when circular logging was enabled, UltraBac crashed with an AV.

  • Bug in UltraCopy when attempting to copy a DLT Tape to an Onstream tape.

  • Fixes possible 997 errors during restores.

Version 5.04 Build 7/19/1999

New Features

  • Licensing can now be done via an email attachment, even to remote machines. Just fill out the form here. Once the information is submitted, an email will be sent back to you with the license code. Just open the attachment and the machine is automatically licensed. (You must be logged in as an administrator of the remote machine).

Bug Fixes:

Version 5.03 Build 5/11/1999

New Features:

  • Unique ID Event Logging. All entries to event log used to be 4096. Now each error and entry will have a unique ID so users can monitor the event log for entries with a particular number.

  • Partition Level Image Backup and Restore. Users can now back up or restore a single partition instead of the entire disk.

  • RAID for tape devices. RAID level 0, 1 and 3 available as an extra cost option.

  • Ability to disable the background bitmap.

  • Ability to restrict SQL enumeration of servers to only those specified in the Client Configuration Utility.

  • Ability to not allow the use of Virtual Devices for backup in SQL 7.0 (force Named Pipes).

  • Command Line Restore with .ubr files.
