Top Ten Reasons to Upgrade to UltraBac 8

Click for more information.

  1. Support for Barcodes and Media Pools
  2. Database Indexing Option
  3. Differential Image Backup
  4. UltraCopy
  5. Host a Restore from any Machine with UltraBac v8.0 Installed
  6. New and Improved "Find Files"
  7. Backup support to CD and DVD
  8. Improved Locked File Backup
  9. Rebuild Index for Restore
  10. Native Support for Itanium (IA64) and AMD64 (A64)

1. Support for Barcodes and Media Pools:   Barcode and media pool support is an excellent reason for customers with autoloaders to upgrade to version 8. This feature easily justifies upgrading by saving time and effort when managing media. Version 8 allows users to either continue performing slot-based backups, or to change over to using media pools where UltraBac manages the tapes and slots based on media bar codes.

2. Database Indexing Option:   Version 8 now offers a centralized SQL based database that integrates the backup indexes created from multiple installations of UltraBac on a network. Now manage all backup tapes from one location. Search for files from available media in seconds. Once located, select the file (supports multiple versions) to restore, and if an autoloader was used for the backup it will load the correct tape and do the restore automatically. This feature will save users valuable time during the restore process.

3. Differential Image Backup:   Differential image backups can now be made after a full image backup has been performed. When enabled, an UltraBac differential backup only backs up the active sectors that have been modified since the last full image backup. This makes for faster backups, less network traffic and saves on storage space. This means you can schedule a full image backup on Sunday and then do a differential Monday through Saturday that only backs up the changed sectors since Sunday's full image backup. A full recovery only requires restoring the Sunday backup and then the last differential.

4. UltraCopy:   UltraCopy is a highly useful optional cost utility designed to: a) allow duplicate tape copying between tape drives, b) duplicate a disk backup to tape, and c) take multiple disk backups, copy and consolidate them in their native UltraBac format to tape with built-in media spanning capability. Now users can send all backups to disk, while also setting up a job to run UltraCopy. Aside from moving disk backup to tape, this utility allows end users to create duplicate backups using tape for offsite storage. Copying between tape drives within an autoloader is not currently supported, but is planned for a future release.

5. Host a Restore from any Machine with UltraBac v8.0 Installed:   This option gives users the flexibility of choosing an alternate machine to carry the load of the restore if the current machine is busy with other user requests.

6. New and Improved Find Files:   UltraBac's "Find Files" is now faster and more robust. Search for any file mask and UltraBac will return results from the new database indexes, and online indexes. Find files can even be run against the backup media itself.

7. Backup support to CD and DVD:   Version 8 supports backup in RAW format directly to CD or DVD. The requirements for third party writers are gone, and writing directly to the CD allows UltraBac to maximize the writing speed with no additional overhead. The bottom line for users is more supported formats, faster backup speeds, and faster restore speeds.

8. Locked File Backup;   The Locked File Backup Agent has been enhanced for more efficient CPU and memory usage, plus the ability to perform optional differential image backups.

9. Rebuild Index for Restore:   The Rebuild Index feature allows users to restore from media (like tape) that has no index, by reading raw backup media and creating an index. Having media without an index can easily occur when using media spanning because the index is created at the end of the job, which might be on tape 2 or tape 3, etc. This is a new utility function unique to version 8.0 and builds on UltraBac's Safety Net philosophy.

10. Native Support for Itanium (IA64) and AMD64 (A64):   No emulation here! UltraBac version 8.0 is now available for both 32-bit x86 platforms and 64-bit Itanium and AMD64 platforms. The 64-bit version of UltraBac can backup and manage both 32-bit and 64-bit machines.
