UltraBac Software announced a first to market feature at VMworld 2008 – UBDR Gold's ability to create VMware ESX and/or GSX Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK) files in one simultaneous operation while backing up a live system. This greatly simplifies a disaster recovery by eliminating the conversion required by a typical physical-to-virtual (P2V) operation. The new functionality was recognized as one of the 15 Hot Products at VMworld by CRN. The product will be launched, along with a user friendly VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) Agent, by year end.

NEW SUPPORT FOR THE ADVANCED ENCRYPTION STANDARD (AES)
Starting in UltraBac v8.3.1, UltraBac Software has added support for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). AES is a block cipher adopted as an encryption standard by the U.S. government. The AES algorithm is capable of using cryptographic keys of 128, 192, and 256 bits to encrypt and decrypt data in blocks of 128 bits.

UltraBac can now use AES as the encrypting algorithm for backups and restores. AES is enabled on the device level and set as a global option. This setting will apply for every device used to store your backups. It is recommended the AES encryption key be kept in a safe place with a second copy stored in a place other than the encryption server. Without the encryption key, no data can be restored.

In addition to increased security, AES can encrypt data much faster than Blowfish. Blowfish was the only encryption method used for previous versions of UltraBac and is still available for encrypting UltraBac backups.

Currently UltraBac's implementation of SMTP does not support SMTP authentication. For users that require authentication, there are third party implementations available. Here is one such implementation...   More
