From the CEO: 25 Innovative Years
It gives me great pleasure to announce a landmark anniversary for UltraBac Software. The company celebrated
its 25th year in business on May 1st. While proud of this accomplishment, we are even more pleased by our many
first-to-market technology achievements and the feedback customers have provided regarding our commitment to
excellence. All of us at UltraBac Software have been excited to play a major role in the development of the
constantly evolving Windows backup and disaster recovery industry, and it has been gratifying to watch our
customers and resellers grow along with us over the years.
UltraBac Software was originally founded as Barratt Edwards International Corporation (BEI) in 1982 to
develop and market utility software in the Wang minicomputer customer base. During the Wang years, the company
developed and brought to market a number of diverse applications. Then in the late 80's, Exabyte Corporation launched
their 8MM tape drive which revolutionized the tape backup business. Wanting to share in this market, the company
developed a COBAL and Assembly language based backup product and named it UltraBac.
While fairly obvious, the name UltraBac was chosen as an acronym to mean "The Ultimate in Backup." It was the
company's habit to restrict product names to 8 characters to fit as a file name. This eliminated the letter "k"
from "back," and the name stuck.
As customers began to abandon the VS minicomputer and Wang, BEI had already begun to reinvent itself. In 1993,
the decision was made to create a new backup product on another platform. After a market review of existing backup
products for UNIX and NetWare, we decided to be bold and author a Windows NT version of UltraBac that would be written
in C and C++. NT was a new operating system with little market share and serious stability issues, but it offered an
opportunity to be one of the first companies to offer a comprehensive third party backup product. UltraBac for Windows
NT was launched in early 1995. A pre-release version was evaluated in a competitive review, and while it was found
lacking in areas, the software was so much faster than the other backup and restore products that the phone started ringing.
In fact, our first sale was to a competitor! That year our revenue was 90% from Wang sales and 10% from Windows. In 1996,
this flip flopped and 90% of sales were for UltraBac for Windows NT.
After several years of fast growth, it was recommended that the company change its name from BEI to better identify
with backup. For a short period of time the name UltraBac.com was used before it evolved into UltraBac Software - the legal
DBA to which we are known today.
UltraBac Software has focused 100% of its energy and resources in creating backup products since the late 1980s. We've
flourished as a company because of our commitment to developing industry leading technology, and our unwavering support of
our customers. While our primary competitors for business today are huge companies, we've carved out a niche because big is
not always better. This especially holds true when it comes to dedicated customer service, which we take great pride in.
Our goal for the near and long term is to continue to provide technically innovative backup and disaster recovery software
with industry leading technical support. UltraBac Software recently released UltraBac version 8.2, UBDR Pro version 3.5, and
UBDR Gold version 3.5. These versions introduced a SharePoint Agent, restores to partitions both larger and smaller than the
original, and user interface improvements, among other features. We look forward to providing customers with even more exciting
functionality and user friendly software with the fall release of UltraBac version 9.0.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for helping us reach this landmark 25th year. We value your feedback,
input, and appreciate your business. UltraBac Software respects your individual needs, and will continue to provide you with the
quality products and service you have come to know and expect from us. So to you, our customers and resellers, please accept our
sincere gratitude for helping us achieve this milestone. Without your continuous support we wouldn't be the success we are today!
Sincerely,
Morgan Edwards
