Hot Topic from UltraBac Tech Support!

Can I use UltraBac to move a SQL 7.0 or 2000 database to a different server?

UltraBac has the ability to move SQL 7.0 and SQL 2000 databases to either an alternate SQL server or to the same server (renaming the Databases) by using the "SQL7 Move Parameters" when restoring.

STEP ONE - Gathering Information

In order to use the Move Parameters, you must know the exact path of the original .mdf and .ldf database files. Find this informatin in SQL Enterprise Manager, on the original server, by right-clicking on the database and selecting "Properties". Then click on the "Data Files" tab. The file name and the location will be on this screen. You will need the same information for the Transaction Logs.

The drive and the path where the new files will go can be different, but the path must exist before the restore is performed. When restoring to the same server, you can use the same path where the original files are kept, but the actual file names MUST be changed and an alternate database name must be supplied. Otherwise the original database and database files will be overwritten.

STEP TWO - Performing the Restore

In this example, the restore will be moving a database to a different SQL Server.

Change UltraBac into Restore mode and load a SQL Agent Index. When using the Move Parameters, only one database can be restored at a time.

Select the database to be restored.

Click "Perform Restore".

In the "Restore Files to" box: Change the selection to an alternate server.

In the "SQL7 MOVE Parameters" box: Click "<New Entry>".

In the "FileName" box: Type the original file name (without the .mdf).

In the "Path" box: Type the path of the files and the file name (making sure to rename the file if needed) using .mdf. This should now look very similar to the information in SQL Enterprise Manager. Click "OK".

Go through this same process for the Transaction Logs.

Then type a name for this new database in the "Alternate Database Name" box.

Check the box that says "Unattended Restore - do not stop on errors."

Click "Restore".

When the restore is finished there will be a new database on the specified server.
