UltraBac Software Releases UltraBac 5.0 with Stand Alone Backup and 'Universal Diskette' Disaster Recovery Option

BELLEVUE, WA -- August 1, 1998 UltraBac Software (BEI Corporation) of Bellevue, Washington, creator of award-winning storage management software, releases UltraBac 5.0 with Universal Disaster Recovery Diskette Option for both Intel & Alpha Windows NT® users. Disaster Recovery (DR) backup software offers another layer of backup security for mission-critical servers and workstations. UB 5.0 with Universal Diskette DR offers disk-to-disk or tape-to-disk restore in a matter of minutes — not hours. Every Windows NT® system can now have an identical copy of its operating system (OS) disk in a form called an "Image" so that it can be properly restored from either a bootable standby system disk or an offline tape in the event of an unbootable system disk crash. The software also provides the ability to back up an unbooted machine’s disk resources to either tape or disk.

Unlike other available DR programs, UltraBac’s Universal Disaster Recovery Diskette Option uses a standard set of DR diskettes for all servers & workstations in a network. Other DR programs require a unique set of three or more diskettes for each server (not available for workstation), a copy of Microsoft® NT Server on CD, and the last file-by-file backup tape for the failed disk drive. With UB 5.0’s optional Universal Diskette Option enabled, users can boot a completely dead Windows NT® system from one set of common DR diskettes. Such diskettes can be stored on an Intranet, downloaded to floppies, and used to reboot a system anytime the need arises.

UltraBac Software's disaster recovery disk image based technology provides the capability to restore a "dead" system in literally minutes instead of hours. The disaster recovery software can either run stand-alone or can be integrated with UltraBac 5.0, with the additional benefit of sharing scheduling backups to tape and providing individual file level restores from disk images stored on tape.

Aside from disaster recovery, the software provides a means of backing up a machine’s disk drives while booted from the DR diskettes! This provides the ability to take "snap shots" of a stable operating system before installing patches or upgrades that can cause time-wasting problems if unstable. It can also be used to easily upgrade hard drives to larger sizes. UltraBac is the only product available for Windows NT® users that is designed for both stand alone operation and integrated disaster recovery. UltraBac 5.0 with all of its options fits on two floppy disks and is under two megabytes to download from www.ultrabac.com.

Often companies using the software mirroring option available with Windows NT® believe that they are adequately protected and can restore a corrupted system disk from a mirrored drive. In fact, a major retailer with 1200 stores found that in 40% of such the cases using this method, the mirrored drive was also corrupt when recovery was required. UltraBac 5.0 with static mirrored (image) backup will reduce or eliminate instant file corruption found with dynamic software and hardware mirroring.

UltraBac Software provides information and software for people interested in storage management. Our products include scalable backup and disaster recovery software for Windows NT® and 95/98 and are designed for small and medium size networks and large scale enterprise use. Complete working copies of the program can be found at www.ultrabac.com. UltraBac Software's parent firm is BEI Corporation, who was recognized as being the 25th fastest growing privately held company in Washington state and became a member of Software Magazine's Software 500 for 1997.
