New features include consolidated backups via UltraCopy, barcode media pool support, differential
image backup, and native 64-bit support
BELLEVUE, WA -- January 4, 2005 UltraBac Software today released UltraBac version 8.0,
backup and disaster recovery software. Major new features include: UltraCopy for creating duplicate
media for off-site storage, barcode media pool support, differential image backup, and native 64-bit
support for both Intel and AMD processors.
"Version 8.0 piles even more functionality into our already robust backup and disaster recovery
solution," said Morgan Edwards, CEO and founder of UltraBac Software. "User suggestions and requests
really help drive our development of new features and functions. UltraBac v8.0 will be an important
upgrade for many of our larger customers who helped bring these new innovations to market through
their interaction. Protecting our customer's vital data is our number one priority."
UltraCopy continues UltraBac Software's goal to provide features not seen in other backup and
disaster recovery products. UltraCopy has two major benefits: the first is to allow duplication of
tape- or disk-based backups to media for off-site removal and storage. This is a critical component
of any company's disaster recovery strategy. The second benefit of using UltraCopy is that it enables
the consolidation of multiple disk or tape backups to virtually any other removable storage medium.
For example, a user can perform any number of UltraBac disk-to-disk backups for speed, and then use
UltraCopy to copy or move all of those backups to tape or another removable storage media. Built-in
command line functionality also allows disk-to-disk-to-tape functionality.
With version 8.0, UltraBac Software is also leading the industry with native support for both Intel
and AMD high-end 64-bit processors. While some vendors are beginning to support 64-bit via emulation,
UltraBac v8.0 provides one hundred percent native operation for this rapidly growing server
and workstation market segment. Native support for either 64-bit or 32-bit systems allows for seamless
back up and recoveries in mixed processor environments.
Differential image backup functionality allows end-users to perform full image backups on a
periodic basis while differential image backups are performed daily. Completed differential image
backups contain ALL modified blocks on a disk since the last full backup. Using this method speeds
the overall backup process while shortening the overall recovery time for end-users protecting very
large partitions. To recover a partition or disk image, an administrator only needs to restore the
last full backup and the last differential to accomplish a complete recovery. Differential logic also
saves critical recovery time by eliminating the extra restores required by products using incremental
backup logic.
Version 8.0 also includes new support for media pools and barcodes. Users with autoloaders or tape
libraries can now fully automate backups by creating any number of media pools using barcoded tapes.
UltraBac automatically coordinates all the tapes within a media pool for scheduled backup and indexes
all the backup files contained within for quick access and recovery when needed.
Other new features of version 8.0 include a centralized SQL based database indexing option, direct
backup and restore support of CD/DVD writer devices, remote autoloader support, firewire device support,
throughput throttling, and reporting of bad blocks for worn tapes. The database indexing option allows
centralized searches for backed up files across multiple media types. Native support for CD/DVD drives
eliminates the need for third-party writers, thereby maximizing backup and recovery speeds.
Pricing starts from US$495 per server with the ability to backup an unlimited number of
workstations. Additional specific agents, which are available to further customize an UltraBac
installation, include Exchange, SQL Server, Locked File Backup, Oracle, UNIX, NetWare, FTP, Tivoli
Storage Manager, and an Autoloader Module.
