Introduction
Using our Oracle Agent, Oracle may now be backed up without stopping the services beforehand. "Hot" backups are performed when possible (unless the preferences are set to "Force Cold Backup Always") and UltraBac will automatically take Oracle offline for "cold" backups. This option is an Extra-Cost Option. The use of the optional Oracle Agent is controlled by the UltraBac.com licensing module. Pre-license evaluation versions of UltraBac default to Oracle Agent enabled status. Permanent licensing can be updated by telephone or web-site to include the use of the Oracle Agent after purchase. For phone numbers, addresses and web-site information:
See Web-site: UltraBac Licensing Center
Benefits of Using the Agent:
Both "Cold" and "Hot" backups are automated, eliminating the management of multiple utilities and processes typically performed by a database manager.
The Oracle database backups become part of the comprehensive UltraBac backup no longer requiring separate backup processes.
The Oracle agent can be configured to perform "Hot" or "Cold" backups.
In order to use the Oracle Agent, you must:
Have Oracle version 8i or greater installed.
Perform only local Oracle Agent backups - no remote Oracle databases.
Set the Oracle Agent preferences using the option path "Tools"/"Preferences"/"Oracle Agent". This includes providing a valid Oracle user Id and passwords with the necessary authority.
See User Manual: "Oracle Agent Preferences" section of the "Setting Preferences" chapter.
Put the Oracle database in "ARCHIVELOG" mode to perform "hot" backups. "Hot" backups cannot be performed on Oracle databases in "NOARCHIVELOG" mode; instead UltraBac will perform a "Cold" backup.
Create an Oracle Backup Set – see following section.
Creating an Oracle backup set is similar to creating other agent backup sets.
See User Manual: "Methods to Create Sets" section of the "Creating Backup Sets" chapter.
Restoring a "Cold" backup will restore information up to the point of the backup. Restoring a "Hot" backup will restore information up to the point of failure, since the existing logs will be applied.
Restoring a "Hot" backup will restore information up to the point of failure, since the existing logs will be applied.

UltraBac's Oracle Agent does not support migration between versions of Oracle. The version of Oracle should be the same when restoring as when backing up.
UltraBac's Oracle Agent supports Oracle version 8i or greater.
