To perform a foreground backup of a single set, follow these steps (to backup two or more sets at once, review the "Backing Up a Group" and "Run Now" functions):
Run the program Icon "UltraBac", from the UltraBac Program Group.
Select the "Mode"/"BACKUP" option path .
If there are multiple storage device choices, use "CTRL-T" to select a storage device from the "UltraBac – Select Device" screen. This screen is discussed in the "Media Preferences" of the "Creating Backup Sets" chapter. Note: The active storage device is displayed at in the "UltraBac (BACKUP)" screen's title bar.
After setting the active storage device, click on the "Backup"/"Open" option. This will display all created Backup Sets ("*.UB Files).
Highlight a Backup Set and click on "Open" or double click. This action will load the directory for the disk. All Directories and files selected during the Set creation will be checked for backup. You may modify the Backup Set and save the changes before continuing with this backup. Note, if a problem with the set is encountered, e.g. points to an invalid disk, a message box will be displayed. Acknowledging the message will load the set.

To password the media (either tape or disk), key in up to a 12 alphanumeric password and then the corresponding confirm password field and press the "Prepare Tape" key. The password will be written to the media and must be subsequently used for each restore operation.
Note: Currently the Password Protected Media option should not be used with Image backups that require using SADR (Stand Alone Disaster Recovery) floppies to restore. The SADR floppies do not support password protected media.
After clicking on "Perform Backup" (and then preparing new media if necessary), the following will be displayed:

Figure 64: Interactive Backup Options
The default Backup Set description will be displayed and may be modified if necessary.
The "Back Up Registry" check box default is extracted from Preferences. Checking this box will cause UltraBac to write the Registry files to the target backup media.
If the "Clear Media" check box is left blank, new data is appended to the end of the media. To clear the media first, click on the check box. Brand new storage media do not need to be cleared. Backup takes a little longer to get started when clearing a storage media. Clearing a storage media overwrites any existing data on a storage media.
To verify the files written to tape immediately after the backup, check the "Verify After" check box.
Click on the "Clear Archive Bit" option if the file's archive bit is to be reset after backup.
The "Delete Files After Archive" option is only available during an archive and to enforce prudent backup strategy, it automatically enables the "Verify After" option. To protect the system directory and the root of the system drive, this option will not remove any files with the system or hidden attribute set. NOTE: This option deletes the files after they are archived and should be used with caution. If any files fail to backup or verify, no files are deleted.
The "Back Up System State" check box default is extracted from Preferences. Checking this box will cause UltraBac to write the System State files to the target backup media.
Click on the "Backup" button to start the backup.

Figure 65: Date Protected Storage Media Message
The following dialog box will be displayed if the "Storage Media" is an archive media. An archive cannot be stored on media prepared for backups and vice versa. Trying to perform a backup to an archive media will invoke the following prompt:

Figure 66: –Archive Overwrite Warning
Normally the user would exchange the storage media and then select "OK". As a double safety, both the "Overwrite 'Archive' Media" option and the "OK" button must be selected to force the media from an archive to a backup media. Doing so overwrites all archive data! Remember many archives contain the only copy of the data!
As the storage device drive prepares to write to the storage media, the prompt "Preparing Storage Media" will be displayed and if the registry is being backed up, the prompt "Generating Registry Backup Files" is displayed.

Figure 67: Interactive Backup Progress
The Progress dialog box is updated after each file has been processed.
Upon completion of a backup, statistics about the backup are displayed:

Figure 68: Interactive Backup Statistics
If the Auto Delete Indexes function has been activated, a dialog box will be displayed stating that all online disk indexes over "###" days will be deleted. The operator has the option to click on either "OK" or "Cancel". Clicking on "Cancel" skips the delete function. Auto Delete is set in the Index Section of Preferences. The field can be set from 0 to 365. A value of zero turns the automatic purge function off.

Figure 69: Delete "Out of Date" Indexes
If the "Verify After" check box was set on before the "Process Backup" button was clicked, the verify process begins immediately upon completion of backup. If the "Verify After" check box was not set on, the operator has another opportunity to verify the backup by clicking on a "Verify" button that appears in the dialog box immediately after backup has finished writing to the storage media.

Figure 70: Interactive Verify Progress
UltraBac verifies the data by calculating a 32-bit CRC as each data block from the storage media is read and compared to the CRC value that was written to the storage media during the backup process. As a note, UltraBac's verification process does not impact the system resources significantly and users can resume work immediately after the backup is complete, whilst the verification is performed.
Once a foreground backup has been completed, you may perform a restore or verify operation by clicking on the "Mode" option of the Menu Bar.
