Advanced Preferences

The "Advanced" preferences dialog box is a collection of options used to perform specialized functionality.

The "Disable Input Disk Buffering" option disables Windows NT/2000's caching while processing files. This option should only be used if extremely poor performance is experienced (thrashing) while processing huge files, considering this option will compromise performance during normal conditions. NOTE: When this option is enabled, the auditing/security information on the file is NOT backed up.

The "Disable Output Disk Buffering" is the same as the above "Disable Input Disk Buffering" option, except it is used when backing up to local disk. This option stops Windows NT/2000's cache manager form caching the write operations when backing up to local disk.

The "Lock Files During Backup" option locks each file while UltraBac backs it up, such that other applications cannot open this file for exclusive use. UltraBac locks each file only as long as it actually takes to back up each individual file. The default for this option is "enabled".

The "Store Enhanced Redundancy Information on Media" option stores information on the media such that UltraBac may re-create the index by reading through the media. This is very useful if the media is damaged such that UltraBac cannot load the index directly from the media. This option should always be "enabled".

The "Throttle I/O Performance" option slows UltraBac down, enhancing the troubleshooting process. UltraBac's high throughput will manifest hardware and communication problems other software will not. If UltraBac functions fine with this option on, but produces errors with this option off, the errors are probably related to hardware and/or communication problem. NOTE: This option is intended for troubleshooting only and should not be left on! Doing so will greatly reduce UltraBac's performance!

The "Autoloader slots numbered from zero" option, when checked, causes the numbering of the autoloader slots to start at zero instead of one. This option should be set to correspond with your autoloader numbering schema.

The "Force Local Backup Only" option forces UltraBac to search and enumerate information from local drives only rather than the whole network. This can save much time when local drive information is adequate or is all the information available such as with the "Personal Edition". Note: Whenever using a Network Workstation edition on a network with more than 6 computers, and experiencing unacceptable delays when opening UltraBac, this option should be selected.

The "Disable Automatic UltraBac Share Creation" option suppresses the creation of the UBPROG, UBDATA and UBINDEX shares. Without creating these shares, it is impossible for UltraBac to save sets to another computer and much of UltraVue will not be functional. Normally this option should be unchecked (disabled) since security level is usually satisfied since UltraBac creates these shares such that they can only be accessed by users with (Domain) Administrator authority.

With the "Enable Scheduler Service Installation Dialog" option enabled, when UltraBac starts and finds the BEI scheduler not installed, UltraBac will automatically prompt for information and then install the BEI Scheduler.

The "Disable Background Bitmap" option replaces UltraBac's default background with a solid color speeding up UltraBac's re-draw rate. This option enhances the performance of computers with limited resources.

The "Number of errors in set before aborting" value, allows the user to set the number of errors allowed during backup of a particular set. When this limit is reached, UltraBac automatically skips the remainder of the set. This stops a set taking an enormous amount of time when the remote computer is no longer available. Regular errors such as sharing violations, file/path not found errors do not count toward the limit.

The "Default Editor" option requires a path to the desired editor. The path should be a complete path to the editor's executable file (e.g. "C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe").
