INFO: Partition Image Restores using SADR with UltraBac versions 5.x

UBQ ID Number: UBQ000153

Last Modified: 2000-07-02 at 10:44:02

SUMMARY:

DETAILS:

Before performing a restore of an image set, first verify that the device drive has been powered on. If it is not powered on it will not be detected. If the drive to be restored is a new SCSI disk or you do not know the status of a replacement disk, it may need to first be low-level formatted.

Intel Computer Users:

Insert Floppy #1 into the computer and reboot the computer. Insert Floppies #2 and #3 when requested.

Alpha Computer Users:

Booting from floppy: A the ARC console choose "Run a Program" and specify the program to run as

Booting from removable or hard disk. Use the ARC naming convention when specifying the program to run. This takes the form

where:

(W)

=

the SCSI bus ordinal number, where "0" would represent the first controller.

(X)

=

the SCSI ID of the device ("0" through "6" on standard SCSI-2 buses)

(Y)

=

the SCSI LUN , almost always "0"

(Z)

=

the partition number – starting from "1

After completing the boot process, all software components necessary for the restore will have been loaded. A list of available source drives and tapes will be displayed.

Any combination of drive and tape devices may be used for source and destination devices (e.g. tape to disk, disk to disk, tape to tape, etc.) If this is a Static Mirror Partition Level Image Restore, then the "Source Device" and "Destination Device" will be partitions. This example demonstrates a Standard Partition Level Image Restore, which uses a tape as the source device:

Figure 4: Selecting Source Device

Insert the UltraBac backup storage media that contains the image backup(s) that are to be restored if prompted. When restoring from a tape device, allow the tape drive to come to rest before pressing "Enter".

Figure 5: Prompt to insert Image Tape

The program will automatically read the storage media and locate the first image backup set. Press F5 to skip to the next image backup set.

Upon reading the image set, the operator will be presented a list of each physical disk image contained in the backup set. Select the image for the restore. Another list will be presented of all the available disk drives that can be restored to with the first exact size match already highlighted.

If prompted to restart the computer and restoring from removable media, eject the media before restarting the computer.

NOTE: When restoring to a new disk of a different model, make sure that it is at least as large as the previous model. If the drive is replaced with a much larger disk than the original, unusable space may result. If this occurs, use the NT Disk Administrator utility or the 2000 Disk Management utility after the restore and reclaim this unused space as another partition.

NOTE ABOUT IDE DISK DEVICES:

UltraBac image backup and restore users have reported an anomaly when restoring IDE disk drives. The size, reported by the ATAPI (used by NT) driver, does not match the size reported by the ATDISK driver, used by the boot floppies. This anomaly can result in a "fatal Disk Error" being reported when writing the data at the end of the media after a successful restore. If this error is encountered, check the disk drive after booting to NT to ensure that all the files have actually been restored successfully.

Also note that the atapi.sys file provided by NT prior to version 4.0 Service Pack 4 does not natively support IDE disk devices larger than 8GB. If you are using an IDE device larger than 8GB and created the SADR Floppies on a computer using a version prior to 4.0 Service Pack 4, you will need to update the atapi.sys and the atdisk.sys files. Copy them from the Service Pack 4 CD to the appropriate SADR floppy – usually the last floppy. The files should be at least as new as the following:

NOTE: The "MakeDisk.exe" utility, which provides for the creation of the SADR diskettes, will not be included in UltraBac 6.3 and above, in favor of the UltraBac Disaster Recovery (UBDR) utility.
