SUMMARY:
The locked-file backup agent was created to allow customers to backup files that are exclusively locked by a service in NT. During a normal file-by-file backup, UltraBac skips certain files like "wins.mdb" and reports a sharing violation in the backup log. In order to backup these locked files, you must use our locked-file backup agent, which is an extra cost option in UltraBac and must be enabled within the licensing screen.
DETAILS:
Once the agent is enabled, the "locked-file backup" checkbox will be available to select in the beginning of the backup wizard. This box must be checked in order to create a set that will backup locked files.

When opening the set created with the locked-file backup agent with a text editor like notepad, the set should look similar to the following:
%The C Drive @ RYAN
!C:\
@
+*.* /R
The only difference between the locked file set and a regular set is the "!" before the volume letter.
After the locked-file backup agent is enabled, you will have the option of using the system pagefile or the UltraBac pagefile for the backup. The preference screen is located in Tools/Preferences/Locked-File Backup tab.

When setting the size of the page file in the "Size (MB)" box, note that if more than 30MB (the default) of changes are made to the disk during the locked-file backup, then this is known as a "meltdown" and will be recorded in the log. Consequently, the files backed up may have lost their integrity and are not guaranteed to successfully restore.
"Do not allow file to be larger than _______ % of free disk space" means that if you set it to 50%, and only 40MB of free-space exists on the volume, UltraBac will limit the size of its pagefile to be 20MB, even the "Size (MB)" box is set to 30MB. Therefore, the more restrictive of the two settings is the one that takes precedence.
Locked-File Backup Limitations
Currently UltraBac's Locked-File Backup agent is available for Windows NT but not for Windows 2000. The Locked-File Backup agent will be available for Windows 2000 in a future version of UltraBac.
Currently UltraBac's Locked-File Backup agent will "freeze" only local partitions and not remote partitions.
Currently UltraBac's Locked-File Backup agent "freezes" one drive letter at a time therefore:
UltraBac's Locked-File Backup Agent is intended for use with database that have all files including transaction logs in one partition.
Using the option path, "Backup"/"New"/"Backup all local fixed drives and registry" will result in a set that freezes each drive letter in turn independently.
Currently UltraBac's Locked-File Backup does not support Cluster Servers.
Locked-File Backup is available in UltraBac versions 5.5 and greater.
