SUMMARY:

Registry files are skipped during backup.

DETAILS:

Active registry files will be iterated along with all of the other files on a computer's drive, but will get skipped as the files are locked by Windows NT/2000 itself. They will still be backed up as part of the registry, if that option has been selected for backup. A sample backup log that shows these files being skipped follows:

SET SUMMARY - The C Drive @ SERVER

    BACKUP ERRORS:

    \\SERVER\C$\WINNT\Profiles\Administrator\

    NTUSER.DAT 488 KB 7/20/99 1:13:00 AM a

Skipped Active Registry File -- Will be backed up as part of registry (if selected)

    ntuser.dat.LOG 1,024 7/20/99 1:13:00 AM a

Skipped Active Registry File -- Will be backed up as part of registry (if selected)

In this scenario, the user "Administrator" appears to have been logged onto the machine when the backup occurs because the "ntuser.dat" for the "Administrator" account is in use.

You may also see similar results on the "%systemroot%\system32\config" directory. This is where the registry files are kept (SAM, Security, software, system, eventlogs, etc.)
