INFO: Using Admin Shares Versus Standard User Shares

SUMMARY:

Benefits of using Admin Shares versus standard user shares on an NT/2000 computer, when creating sets in UltraBac.

DETAILS:

When connecting to a network client to perform a backup operation, the set must utilize and specify the share name from which to process. When defining the set, the backup administrator has the choice between using an "Admin" share, e.g. "\\NetworkMachineName\C$" as opposed to using a standard share name such as "\\NetworkMachineName\C".

The benefit of using the admin share is that it always defines the entire logical disk rather than the potential limiting view which a user defined share may offer. The negative side of using the admin share is that the user ID performing the backup must have unrestricted Administrative Privileges. Therefore, from a backup perspective, it may be more desirable to create a standard user share for each logical drive for each network machine to reduce the dependence on unrestricted administrative privilege for the backup operator ID.

Whether to use the admin share (if it exists) versus using a standard share depends completely on the individual circumstances encountered for each machine.

Note that only NT/2000 workstation/professional & server based machines have admin share capability.
