SUMMARY:
UltraBac can define use Device Sets (RAID) to create redundant backups to tape or disk devices.
CONDITIONS:
1. Spanning media is not possible when backing up using the Device Sets function.
2. Disaster Recovery diskettes do NOT recognize RAID(T) devices. Therefore you cannot restore an Image backup using disaster recovery diskettes. The only way to restore an image backup is from within the GUI of UltraBac and this only applies when the target disk is shown as "Free Space" by the Disk Administrator in NT or Disk Management in 2000.
3. The only time that a device set can include both disk path and tape device is when using RAID 1 (Mirroring). This allows you to backup to a disk path and tape device at the same time. This method could be used in making an offsite storage copy of your backup. In this case the backup speed will be about the same speed as the slower of the 2 devices.
DETAILS:
Upon initial installation, there will be no defined Device Sets. The maximum number of defined Device Sets is 100. A Device Set may be of tape drives or disk paths..
In order to use Device Sets (RAID) within UltraBac, multiple devices (tape and/or disk-path) must be defined. Tape devices available to Windows NT/2000 will automatically be available for Device Sets but disk-paths must be defined.
Next the Device Set itself must be defined by selecting "Select"/"Storage Device"/(pull down the Show menu)/"DeviceSet"/"Add". The "Edit Device Set" dialog box will appear:

Figure 3: Edit Device Sets
Enter a unique Device Set "Identifier". To add devices to the set, select "Add" and the "Add Devices To Device Set" dialog box will appear:

Select a tape or disk device and then "OK". Repeat adding devices until all devices are displayed in the "Edit Device Set" dialog box. UltraBac suggests the same make and model of devices be used within a Device Set if possible.
Finally, from the "Edit Device Set" dialog box, select the RAID "style" desired. A minimum of two devices must be added to enable RAID 0 or 1, a minimum of 3 devices to enable RAID 3 or 5, and a minimum of 4 devices to enable RAID 0/1.

From within the "Select Device" screen, use the "Remove" and "Edit" buttons as needed. Highlighting a Device Set will make it the active storage device, and enabling "Save as Default Device" will make the highlighted device the default storage device. Select "OK" to accept changes. Note: When using a scheduled backup the storage device must be defined by using the option path, "Scheduler"/"Scheduler Backups"/(highlight a scheduled backup (group))/"Options"/"Define Storage Device"/(highlight the desired Device Set)/"Add".
RESTORE PROCESS
Using a Device Set as a storage device during a restore is similar to a regular restore with the following considerations. All appropriate removable media needs to be inserted before restoring. With RAID 0 all removable media are necessary, but with RAID types 1, 3 and 5, one media may be missing, and with RAID 0/1 (RAID 10), one set of tapes may be missing. UltraBac will post a message noting the missing media and allow the restore to proceed. With RAID 3 the parity data is maintained on the last drive.
When no longer necessary, defined DeviceSets can be deleted using the "Remove" button or edited by using the "Edit" button. Refer to the Chapter "Disk-to-Disk Backups" in the manual for more information.
