SUMMARY:
No client agent is required to back up the registry of a remote Windows NT/2000 Workstation, Professional or Server.
DETAILS:
QUESTION: An associate tells me that the registry won't be backed up without an agent on the remote server, which I do not have installed. Do I need something on my remote servers or is checking the Back Up Registry box all I need to do to do a complete restore in the event of a crash?
ANSWER: Some backup programs require an agent present, but ours doesn't. If you have the "back up registry" option checked, then your backup log should look something like this:
DAVID registry backup successful
SET SUMMARY - FULL - DAVID - C Started On: 1/6/99 At: 10:06:55 PM
10896 File(s) totaling 509,981KB written. No Files skipped. No Files Corrupt.
Begin: 10:06:55 PM End: 10:15:31 PM - (988.3 KB/s 57.9 MB/Min 3474.6 MB/hr)
If you see "DAVID registry backup successful" then you are getting a good registry backup.
If you are backing up a Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer, then an agent on that workstation will be required in order to back up the registry. (See UBQ: UBQ000045 - Win9x Agent Details)
