HOWTO: Restoring Individual Files from an Image Backup

UBQ ID Number: UBQ000027

Last Modified: 2000-06-05 at 10:43:11

SUMMARY:

How to restore an individual file (or group of files) from an Image backup. Note: Currently software compressed images can not be mounted. Images created with the in-use cluster image preference enabled cannot be mounted either. An image backup created using the UBDR utility cannot be mounted; nor can image created using the SADR utility.

DETAILS:

  1. Mounting the Backup Image:

    1. After making sure you have inserted the correct storage media into the source storage drive, start UltraBac.

    2. Make sure the correct storage device has been selected. UltraBac's Main Window Screen will display the active storage device on the Title line and "Ctrl-T" is a hot key for direct access to the "Select Device" dialog box.

    3. From UltraBac's main menu, select "Mode" and choose "Restore".

    4. Again from the main menu select "Restore" and choose "Load Index From Storage Media".

    5. Select the Index containing the partition(s) that you wish to mount. Currently these must be full disk images - they cannot be partition images.

    6. Click on "Load Set", and then select the Image file for mounting by placing a check mark on the box next to the image file, typically Disk (#) (e.g. Disk 0).

    7. Clicking on "Perform Restore" will produce the following screen:

    8. Select "Mount Image as logical drive letter(s). and select "Restore".

    9. Wait for the Image Mount window to appear and then click on OK. The Images are now mounted.

  2. Restoring Files:

    1. Select either File Manager or the NT/2000 DOS Prompt Box. File Manager is preferred. Warning: It is recommended that you do not use Windows NT/2000 Explorer for this step.

    2. When File Manager opens, the partitions mounted from storage media will appear as local removable media drives on the Drive Icon Bar. Select the local removable media drive (source drive) containing the file(s) you wish to restore.

    3. If a second drive window is already open, highlight it. If not, open a new drive window by choosing "Windows" and selecting "New Window".

    4. Now select the destination drive from the Drive Icon Bar.

    5. Drag and copy the needed directories/files in the source drive window to the destination drive window.

  3. Dismounting a Disk Image:

    1. When the restore operation is completed, the partitions mounted from the storage media must be dismounted. Exit File Manager (or NT/2000 DOS Prompt) and start UltraBac if not already started.

    2. Select "Tools" and choose "Dismount Images". From the Dismount Images window choose "Dismount". Wait for the dismount process to complete, and then exit UltraBac.
